I've never been to Morocco, but I've been captivated by its exotic otherness since I was a kid. Desert fortresses and caravans. Ancient markets teeming with snake charmers, fortune tellers, and veiled woman peering from doorways. And the color, in such sharp contrast to a desert land. Piled high in the spice markets - towers of carmine, amber and celadon. All the colors of the earth in carpets woven in unseen villages. In the dye markets, silk in jewel tones billowing in the desert sun. My boyish dreams of Morocco inspired the Marrakesh series. I hope to get there some day. I created this series by piercing designs onto sheets of silver. I then fuse the designs onto another layer and forge these into cylinders. This allows me to create any color scheme by anodizing and hand dying tubes that fit into the beads of Marrakesh. All the material is made of sterling silver and the dyed anodized metals are permanent and lasting. |
